How to Address Substance Abuse the Right Way
A substance addiction is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with properly. There is a need for professional intervention in the process to see to it that the addiction stops and the patient is left free of the dependence. As per the kind of addiction at hand, there will be the selection of an appropriate rehabilitation program. You can see why there are different levels of care in the rehabilitation process.
An addiction is a state one achieves when they keep using a substance to a level where they can no longer function without getting it. Addicts however fail to acknowledge there is a problem, and continue to treat it as something simple and inconsequential. There has to be an acceptance that this situation is bad before anything worthwhile can be done about it. When they finally do, it shall be beneficial to get them the right intervention care for their condition.
The levels of intervention care are the outpatient, intensive outpatient and inpatient care. These are considered as per the severity of the addition and its effects on the patient. They can also be broadly categorized as inpatient and outpatient care services. The residential inpatient treatment takes the most serious approach to the process. This is what carries the name rehab. This shall be where the patient moves into the clinic for closer monitoring and intervention until they are declared free of the addiction. It is what the worse cases of addiction need. Regular intensive care is the least intense of all services. The patient shall be allowed to go on with their lives, and report for a few hours in a day for their counseling sessions. They may not even have to go there daily. This can also act as the follow-up program for someone who has been through the inpatient program successfully. Intensive outpatient care is a more focused approach, but without the provision of accommodation at the facility. There is normally the provision of residential services at an off-site with similar patients. It also works for those who cannot handle the intensity of the inpatient approach.
The first thing that happens when you make up your mind to go to rehab is an evaluation of your addiction. There shall be some medical tests done that will tell the full story of your addiction and its extent. This shall give them the basis to recommend the right approach of the three. It is common for them to go for residential inpatient care, as this is the most thorough approach. The issue of relapsing is a common one, which inpatient care tends to deal with better. The constant monitoring an intense care shall help deal with it. There is so much that could go wrong otherwise.
