Different Parts of the Internet
The internet is so large you cannot even begin to understand how large. There are about 130 trillion indexed web pages that are accessible by everyone, and only make up a tiny percentage of the whole thing. This leads one to wonder where the rest of it is. Each day new discoveries are being made about that part of the internet people do not know about. It is famously referred to as the deep and dark web.
The other side of the internet is called the deep or dark web. The areas of the internet we can access via Google make up the surface web. Google cannot crawl or index the websites found in the deep web. Those sites happen to be password-protected, such as a financial institution’s website. The deep web happens to be 500 times bigger than the surface web. This makes up the largest part of the internet. The dark web, on the other hand, is the tinier part of it. It also happens to adhere to no rules.
The dark web hosts all manner of illegal and inappropriate internet activity. The common web browsers cannot get to it. There is also no protection when you venture into it. You need to keep off malware by signing up on an anonymous browser. The Tor browser is ideal. You will see different URL extensions apart from the ones you see around. You will not use .com, .net, or .edu, but use .onion.
The browsing experience is slow and looks ancient. Most sites are text only, with minimal web design. There are innocent as well as not so innocent sites there. You will see some illegal internet activity on a part of those sites. While it is smaller than the illegal activities of the surface web, their effects are profound and the damage long-lasting. You shall find products and services such as human organs, uranium, sperm, deadly weapons, professional assassin services sold here. Those are places where law enforcement is still struggling but will not likely get to the bottom of.
The internet infrastructure comprises of billions of devices passing along data. The internet is always storing, communicating, and computing data. The amount of data it can transfer speaks to its vastness. The internet is believed to contain up to 1 million exabytes of data, which is a quintillion byte of data. That figure is staggering, to say the least. It also comes up with 1.1 zettabytes of traffic per year. One zettabyte is one trillion gigabytes.
These bits of info go to show how vast and yet to be comprehended the internet really is. We need to learn so much more about the internet. You shall discover more about it when you log into this site.
